The 5 Most Common Tajweed Mistakes Beginners Make — And How to Fix Them
Bismillah. In over 15 years of teaching Quran, I have corrected the same five Tajweed errors in students from every background. These are not obscure rules โ they are fundamental mistakes that, once fixed, transform your recitation immediately.
Incorrect Makhraj of ุญ and ู
Students frequently pronounce the deep letter ุญ the same as the light letter ู. These come from entirely different articulation points and can change the meaning of Quranic words.
✓ Fix: Practise ุญ with a strong, audible breath from deep in the throatNot Observing Ghunnah on Noon and Meem Mushaddad
When ู or ู has a shaddah, the ghunnah must be held for two counts. Most beginners skip it entirely or hold it less than required โ even in Surah Al-Fatiha.
✓ Fix: Place your finger under your nose and feel the vibration for 2 countsShortening Long Vowels (Madd)
The three long vowels must each be held for exactly two counts as natural Madd. Students routinely cut these short, effectively changing the Arabic text.
✓ Fix: Tap your finger twice for every long vowel as you read to build the habitIdghaam vs Izhaar Confusion
Students often merge letters that should be clear, or pronounce separately letters that should merge. This is extremely common in the short surahs of Juz Amma.
✓ Fix: Memorise the six Izhaar letters: ุก ูู ุน ุญ ุบ ุฎWrong Tafkheem and Tarqeeq
Many students apply heavy pronunciation to letters that should be light, and vice versa. The letter ุฑ has complex rules that most students ignore.
✓ Fix: Study the seven Tafkheem letters and their conditions with a qualified teacherHow to Correct These Errors
The most effective way to correct Tajweed errors is under the guidance of a certified teacher who can hear you in real-time. Record yourself reciting and listen back. Slow down to 50% speed when practising corrections. Focus on one error per week rather than all five simultaneously.
